Bariatrics and Weight Management in Tampa Bay

Weight loss is an extremely personal journey for every individual. Unique bodies require unique treatment plans when it comes to shedding pounds. While many people may find success with traditional approaches to weight loss such as diet, exercise or medication, those with severe obesity may require surgery to lose weight and reduce the risks of comorbidities such as diabetes and heart disease. BayCare Medical Group has a network of board-certified surgeons specializing in bariatric surgery located in Tampa and Plant City. Our weight loss physicians are committed to partnering with you throughout your journey as you undergo your procedure, recover and commit to a long-term lifestyle transformation.

Patient safety and the safety of our team members has always been a priority for BayCare Medical Group. Our physicians are available and accepting new patients for telehealth or in-person visits.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve taken the following additional safety steps:

  • Prescreening and triaging patients based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines
  • Screening all team members and doctors daily for fever and COVID-19-related symptoms
  • Minimizing and/or eliminating waiting room time
  • Providing appropriate physical distancing in waiting rooms
  • Requiring all doctors, team members, patients and visitors to wear masks
  • Frequently cleaning and disinfecting lobbies/waiting rooms, exam rooms and all public spaces

Weight loss surgery is also known as bariatric surgery. There are different approaches to the procedure and your doctor can recommend the best treatment to fit your needs and goals. Types of weight loss surgery include:

  • Gastric bypass surgery – Also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, this procedure involves the redirection of food to a pouch that is surgically created in the stomach; as the food bypasses certain parts of the digestive system, the body’s ability to absorb calories is reduced.
  • Vertical sleeve gastrectomy – Also called gastric sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure involves the removal of approximately two-thirds of the stomach, which limits the amount of food that can be consumed at one time.
